1. Gion Bells Toll
(The sound of the Gion Temple bells echoes the impermanence of all things;
The color of the sāla flowers reveals the truth that the prosperous must decline.
The proud do not endure, they are like a dream on a spring night;
The mighty fall at last, they are as dust before the wind.)
2. The First Battle of Uji
Bridge is torn,
Blades of spears gleaming with golden sun.
Clear are the waters
Of the river of Uji,
And yet bloody-red they are destined to run.
Thrice the warcry rang,
Arrows pierced the sky.
“Onward to the ford –
To drown is but to die!”
Beams of the bridge
As mighty heroes come forth to greet death.
Alas, bamboo leaves
Wither and fall,
And Yorimasa draws his last breath.
At the hour of death
Words in iron clad
Washed away remorse,
Painted soul in blood:
(Like a petrified tree
My life ends
Accompanied by sadness)
3. Scarlet Banners
(Chorus performed by Will Hibben from Fushiryuu)
Through artful schemes
And cunning plots
Legends are born,
Sagas are forged.
Yet in the dark
Of gorges so deep,
Under the waves
Looms our doom.
As in silence winds are driving battleships away,
Waves will cover sorrow and decay.
Scarlet banners drift and scatter as the autumn leaves
That once have been rivaling the sky.
After we fall
Build us no shrines.
Hymns of the dead
You shall not chant.
Bring to our tomb
Those whom you slay.
In blood of our foes
We shall rejoice.
4. Yoritomo’s Legacy
A legacy forged in war,
Brought through battles and flames.
Era of the sword,
And the martial feat.
The sun in the West shines pale,
And the one in the East lights up the sky,
As Kanto warlords rise
To rule with sword and blood.
From the ashes of Hogen
And the first battle of Uji
Banners have emerged,
White and pure as the first snow.
Oh, the warcamp tents!
How these flags soar above you,
Heralding the start
Of a new aeon.
5. Battle of Kurikara
Deep in the mountains, where hills rise so high,
Thirty banners soar in the sky,
Casting their shadows on an ancient shrine –
The august abode of the God of War.
He casts his sight on the clashing hosts –
Lo, as the dusk falls upon the gorge.
Spears rend their way through the Taira ranks,
Driving the scarlet banners into their graves.
(In the cliffs
streams of blood ran and
mounds of corpses piled up.
Now, on the slopes of that valley
Piercings of arrows and cuts of swords
even now remain)
6. All is Void
(The Bodhisattva of true compassion,
Through deep practice in Great Wisdom,
Understands that the body and the five skanhdas are only emptiness.
And with this understanding, he helps all who suffer.
Phenomena is no different from void, void no different from phenomena.
Phenomena becomes void, void becomes phenomena.
The five skandhas too are only phenomena.
All things are void.
There is no birth, no death,
No purity, no impurity,
No increase, no decrease.
This is why in emptiness there is no form, no skandhas,
No eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind.
There is no color, no sound, no smell, no taste, no touch, no thought.
There is no knowing, no ignorance, no illusion, no cessation of illusion.
No withering, no death, no end to withering and death.
There is no beginning to suffering, no end to suffering.
There is no knowledge, no profit, no non-profit.
Because of this wisdom which leads beyond, the Bodhisattva is fearless.
All illusion and all attachment are dropped off, and he can grasp the final end to life, nirvana.
All Buddhas of the past, of the present and of the future
Through this incomparable, unparalleled and authentic incantation,
Can attain understanding of this supreme wisdom which frees us from suffering.
As it does away with all suffering, it allows us to find reality, true void.
Go, go, go together, beyond, fully beyond, to the shore of enlightenment.)
7. Fires of War
When the night is dark
And the war is raging on,
In the name of honour
Every sacrifice is justified.
Raise your banners high,
Make the dead hold the shafts.
Death is but a measure
For the glory of your kin.
Blades set the price of life
And arrows are the coin.
Armies march through the gates,
And you will pay the toll.
When the night is dark
And the war is raging on,
To light up the night of battle
Let us burn the world.
Fires of war!
When the realm is torn
The fracture swallows what is left.
Leaving ashes in their wake.
As another enemy
Is being overwhelmed,
All what’s left for you
Is scorched ruins of your life.
Victory brings honour
But the price of justice must be paid.
Warhorns shake the earth,
Heralding the Latter Days of Law.
Where a battle burns
Only scalding earth and ash remain.
Lighting up the night of battle,
World goes up in flames.
8. On an Empty Battlefield
The tsumi of blood.
Crows paint hte skies black.
The solemn kingdom
Of death and decay.
No rite to amend,
No chant to silence wails of grief.
As if they were a dream –
Those, who shall never come back.
Where swords clash, silence follows,
Drowning the last screams of agony.
How they beckon thee,
The shores of the Sanzu river.
From a raging feast of blood
Gateway to the land of dusk.
Cries of the dead
Echo and disperse into void.
Their souls shall remain
On an empty battlefield.
9. Burning of Rokuhara
As stars wane,
Dawn takes their place,
Painting the sky,
(Let us leave them.
The leaves of wisteria
In the bright of a spring day
Let us leave them.
Beams charred black,
What once has been
Is now void.
(The time came,
And both Minamoto and Taira took their ships
To meet for battle)
